Quarry Quest 2010

So there is this event held in Neenah every year called Quarry Quest. The event gives children and adults a one-of-a-kind opportunity to tour a working quarry, ride and explore giant excavation machinery, and participate in a host of fun, hands-on educational activities. I have heard about this event every year since we moved here but we never did go. Avery's interest in "diggers" lately with all the road construction however is what prompted me to want to take the kids this year.

Boy, I did not realize how many people attended this event! Parking lots for the high school, elementary school, churches and more were filled to the max. We ended up parking as far away as you could possibly get. Thank God for shuttle buses!! Avery was really excited about those. He finally got to ride on a "cool bus" (school bus.)

We were only able to spend 3 hours there (due to having Carter's football game that morning) and alot of that time was spent standing in line, however the boys seemed to have fun and want to go back again next year.

Here are some pictures from the day:

Each of the kids got an orange vest when they arrived. Jordan's seemed a little small for him.

First they got to sit in a crane and help operate it.

Avery seemed really excited at first.

His expression shows different toward the end though.

They also got to help operate a digger. This is Carter.

And here is little Avery.

Avery again. He was all smiles when he came back. He loves diggers.

Each of the boys got a lightening bolt painted on their face.

Avery wasn't so sure about this.

Then we stood in line for an hour and a half to go up on a lift. During this time, Avery fell asleep in my arms.

In order to go up, they had to wear the protective harnesses.

However, I don't really think that Carter's would have protected him all that much. Obviously they don't have children's sizes though.

Getting all strapped in. Carter looked excited. Jordan is a little nervous as he claims he is afraid of heights. The lift operator told him that it isn't the fall that is so bad, it is the abrupt ending that kinda sucks. LOL!

And up they go...

Jordan's not looking too certain about this.

And all the way up. Notice how Carter is looking down, but Jordan isn't near the edge anymore.

They all got back down safely but weren't really sure it was worth waiting so long in line for. They did, however spot a whole bunch more things that they wanted to do from up there. Too bad were were out of time and had to head home.

I guess there is always next year.
